As part of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated annually from September 15-October 15, the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (RACVB) is honoring the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. In that spirit, we are shining a light on some of our region’s Hispanic residents as part of the GoRockford Hispanic Heritage Interview Series.

GoRockford’s first Hispanic Heritage Interview guest is Armando Cardenas, a local small businessman and member of the Coalition of Latino Leaders. Cardenas, who moved to Rockford with his family from Texas decades ago, has so much pride in the Rockford region—and that shapes his continued commitment to give back to his hometown through many volunteer efforts! GoRockford: Thanks for joining us, Armando! Can you shed some light into why it’s important to help make the region more welcoming and equitable?

Armando Cardenas: I have been advocating on behalf of Immigrants and Latino communities for local organizations, civic leaders, and individuals to support and embrace the " Welcoming Community" concept and city plan for our region. America is a nation of immigrants, and Latino immigrants contribute in many positive ways to the social, economic, and cultural fabric of our region and our country.

GoRockford:  What do you love about the Rockford region?

Armando Cardenas: There are 10 reasons why I love the region. My mother and father, Eloisa and Augustine, told my brothers, sisters and I in 1963 about why they decided to move to Rockford and leave our home town in Uvalde, Texas. Their reasons are still true today as they were in 1963, and I now tell my children and grandchildren why I love the Rockford region. My mom and dad said in Rockford:  

  1. We feel welcomed.
  2. People are kind and friendly.
  3. There are many different cultures.
  4. There are excellent schools.
  5. There are beautiful parks.
  6. There are many factories to find jobs.
  7. Rockford is a big/small city where you can get from one end of town to the other in minutes.
  8. There are many hospitals and clinics.
  9. There are many churches.
  10. We see the beauty of the four seasons.   

GoRockford: Can you tell us about your passion to help and serve others?

Armando Cardenas: I'm passionate about helping others and helping families and individuals in the Latino community. I'm passionate about advocating on their behalf and about being a voice for them by bringing to light issues and concerns that impact their lives socially, economically, educationally, politically and culturally. My passion is guided by my belief in the spiritual biblical proverb that tells us to be a voice, speak up and insure justice: "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; insure justice for those crushed, yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice" (Proverbs 32:8-9).

GoRockford: What about your hobbies and interests? And any organizations you’re involved with?

Armando Cardenas: Some organizations I'm involved with include the Coalition of Latino Leaders through its Support and Advocacy Committee, Entertainment Committee and Education Committee, as well as the Winnebago County Crime and Public Safety Commission and Rockford Area Arts Council where I serve as vice president. As for hobbies, I enjoy music, band performances, song writing, singing, and I play various instruments including guitar, accordion and bass (guitar). I also love supporting local promoters and event planners who provide entertainment and cultural events for the Latino community.

GoRockford: Why is National Hispanic Heritage Month important to you?

Armando Cardenas: Hispanic Heritage Month is important because there is recognition and public awareness of the many contributions Latinos have made to this country culturally, politically and economically. My favorite quote is from a song that tells a message about the struggles and triumphs of a people or community, and that, with unity, people cannot be defeated. The name of the song is "El Pueblo Unido Jamas Sera Vencido (The People United Will Never Be Defeated)". It is one of the most internationally renowned songs in the movement for justice. It's a song played at rallies and protests in many U.S. and Latin American countries.

GoRockford: ¡Gracias por acompañarnos, Armando! ¿Puede aclarar por qué es importante ayudar a que la región sea más acogedora y equitativa?

Armando Cárdenas: He estado abogando en nombre de los inmigrantes y las comunidades latinas para que las organizaciones locales, los líderes cívicos y los individuos apoyen y adopten el concepto de "Comunidad Acogedora" y el plan de ciudad para nuestra región. Estados Unidos es una nación de inmigrantes, y los inmigrantes latinos contribuyen de muchas maneras positivas al tejido social, económico y cultural de nuestra región y nuestro país.

GoRockford: ¿Qué es lo que te encanta sobre la región de Rockford?

Armando Cardenas: Hay 10 razones por las que amo la región. Mi madre y mi padre, Eloisa y Augustine, nos contaron a mis hermanos, hermanas y a mí en 1963 por qué decidieron mudarse a Rockford y dejar nuestro pueblo natal en Uvalde, Texas. Sus razones siguen siendo verdaderas hoy como lo fueron en 1963, y ahora les cuento a mis hijos y nietos por qué amo la región de Rockford. Mi mamá y mi papá dijeron en Rockford: 

  1. Nos sentimos bienvenidos.
  2. La gente es amable y amistosa.
  3. Hay muchas culturas diferentes
  4. Hay escuelas excelentes.
  5. Hay hermosos parques.
  6. Rockford es una ciudad grande/pequeña donde puedes ir de un extremo a otro de la ciudad en minutos.
  7. Hay muchos hospitales y clínicas.
  8. Hay muchas iglesias.
  9. Vemos la belleza de las cuatro estaciones.

GoRockford: ¿Puedes contarnos sobre tu pasión por ayudar y servir a los demás?

Armando Cardenas: Me apasiona ayudar a los demás y a las familias e individuos de la comunidad latina. Me apasiona abogar por ellos y ser una voz que los represente sacando a la luz temas e inquietudes que impactan sus vidas a nivel social, económico, educativo, político y cultural. Mi pasión está guiada por mi creencia en el proverbio bíblico espiritual que nos dice que seamos una voz, que defendamos y aseguremos la justicia: “Levanta la voz por los que no tienen voz; Defiende los derechos de los desposeídos, Levanta la voz, y hazles justicia, Defiende a los pobres y necesitados” (Proverbios 31: 8-9).

GoRockford: ¿Qué tal tus pasatiempos e intereses? ¿Y las organizaciones en las que estás involucrado?

Armando Cardenas: Algunas organizaciones en las que participo incluyen la Coalición de Líderes Latinos a través de su Comité de Apoyo y Defensa, el Comité de Entretenimiento y el Comité de Educación, así como la Comisión de Crimen y Seguridad Pública del Condado de Winnebago y el Consejo de Artes del Área de Rockford, donde ejerzo como vicepresidente. En cuanto a mis pasatiempos, disfruto de la música, de las presentaciones de banda, de componer canciones, de cantar y de tocar varios instrumentos, incluyendo la guitarra, el acordeón y el bajo (guitarra). También me encanta apoyar a los promotores y planificadores de eventos locales que ofrecen entretenimiento y eventos culturales para la comunidad latina.

GoRockford: ¿Por qué es importante para ti el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana?

Armando Cardenas: El Mes de la Herencia Hispana es importante porque hay un reconocimiento y una conciencia pública de las muchas contribuciones que los latinos han hecho a este país en el ámbito cultural, político y económico. Mi frase favorita es de una canción que cuenta un mensaje sobre las luchas y triunfos de un pueblo o comunidad, y que, con la unidad, la gente no puede ser derrotada. El nombre de la canción es "El Pueblo Unido Jamás Sera Vencido". Es una de las canciones de mayor reconocimiento internacional en el movimiento por la justicia. Es una canción que se toca en manifestaciones y protestas en muchos países de EE. UU. y América Latina.
