Overview

This year the Winnebago County Soil & Water Conservation District is celebrating the Stewardship Week with a Poster Contest. Stewardship Week reminds us of our individual responsibilities to care for natural resources. Stewardship Week has been celebrated annually since 1955 and it is officially celebrated from the last Sunday in April to the first Sunday in May. It is one of the world’s largest conservation-related observances. This year’s Stewardship week is celebrated from April 28th through May 5th.

Each year the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) hosts a Poster Contest. The Poster Contest is open to students from kindergarten through 12th grade and accepts digital and hard copy submissions. This year has expanded to also allow braille and additional assistance poster submissions. The contest has a five-year rotation for stewardship topics: water, soil, habitat, forestry, and a topic of interest. This year’s theme for the Poster Contest is “May the Forest Be with You, Always.”

The contests start at the county level; winners advance to the state level, and then to the national level, where they receive recognition at NACD’s annual meeting. At the community level Winnebago County SWCD is accepting applications until May 10th from residents of Winnebago County. One winner will be selected from each age group and the winners will receive prizes. We would like to thank everyone who submitted their artwork in the past and encourage students to participate this year. For more information visit Winnebagoswcd.org.
Forests cover a third of the land area in the United States, making up about eight percent of the world’s forests. Not only do forests contain trees, but there is also other plant life, wildlife, insects, and water. Education is a critical element of the conservation effort at the local, state and national levels. Educating young people about the benefits of conservation helps to ensure the next generation will be wise stewards of America’s natural resources.
