Bison Impact on the Grassland Birds at Nachusa

Overview
Additional Information

How have the bison at Nachusa impacted nest success of grassland nesting birds and what does that mean for future restorations? Join us for an evening with Heather Herakovich , Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Biological Sciences at NIU.

The reintroduction of bison at Nachusa Grasslands has been an amazing feat for both prairie restoration and the population of bison. However, it is uncertain how these bison may impact native fauna in Illinois as much of what we know comes from western remnant tallgrass prairie. Restoration projects in Illinois have sought to increase the quality and size of prairie fragments, hypothetically increasing breeding habitat for grassland birds. Grazing and wallowing by these native ungulates have been shown to increase food sources for native grassland birds and the scent of bison hair used in nests may deter nest predators. However, there is a potential for direct trampling and destruction of nests by bison.
