Overview

Christ United Methodist Church welcomes Dorothy Paige-Turner, legendary Rockford educator, performing artist, historian, author and playwright performing her “Songs and Stories of the Underground Railroad” at 11:30 AM on Sunday, June 23 in the dining room (enter door #6).

Through music, poetry and stories, her presentation will explore how secret and coded messages embedded within the spirituals and folk songs communicated various means of escape to those enslaved through the Underground Railroad before, during, and after the Civil War. Hence, these “unknown bards” sang their way to freedom. A free-will donation will be taken at the event. This half-hour program is an entertaining way for adults, children, and youth to learn about American history.
