Natural Land Institute (NLI) will hold their annual seed collecting event. The public is invited to collect seeds from native prairie wildflowers and grasses. The seeds will be sorted, dried and stored by NLI to use in future plantings of the prairies at Nygren Wetland.
Registration is requested by Sep. 21, 2018 for this free event at www.naturalland.org or call 815/964-6666.
This is a fun community service activity that all ages can participate in. All kinds of groups – Scout Troops, 4-H Clubs, homeschool groups, corporate/employee teams, and church groups – are welcome to participate. It’s easy and educational. NLI staff and naturalist volunteers will help children and adults identify the forbs and grasses in their dormant state and show them the proper way of collecting the seeds from the plant. The seed collecting volunteers will discover an array of plant and animal life while visiting the preserve and giving back to nature through this activity.
Volunteers should dress for the weather; wear long sleeves, pants and sturdy shoes. Gloves are recommended. Tools will be provided. Snacks and water will be available.
