Free Family Fun! Adult Adventures! Natural Land Institute presents Family Nature Day, a free family-themed event. Attendees can arrive and depart anytime during the four-hour event.
All ages will enjoy exploring the prairies, wetlands, streams and forests found in this 721-acre wildlife refuge owned by Natural Land Institute. Twelve stations feature hands-on learning experiences about prairies, forests, butterflies and seeds, wetlands, birds, mammals, pollinators, invaders, archeology, water protection, soil ecology, and raptors.
Kids can earn a Nygren Wetland Junior Naturalist badge and certificate if they visit 6 out of 12 learning stations. They will receive a passport with a map, questions to answer and suggested activities. Adults receive a gift if they get their map stamped at 6 or more stations. There will also be wagon rides and guided prairie tours for everyone to enjoy. Exporing on your own is also encouraged.
Directions: Nygren Wetland Preserve - 3190 W. Rockton Rd., Rockton, IL 61072 - From Rockford, take 251 North to Rockton Road exit, turn west toward Rockton, drive through Rockton. The preserve is two miles west of Rockton on the south side of Rockton Road. The first entrance is only open to the public for events and workdays. The second entrance (across from Hansberry Road) has an overlook structure with a spotting scope and is open during daylight hours.
