Rockford Park District's Atwood Center invites all ages to experience "In the Outdoors," a series of free activities held one Saturday a month April-October. Bring the entire family for a few hours of fun experiencing and learning about nature and aspects of the park through the variety of two-hour morning, afternoon, and evening outdoor and indoor programs.
• April 16, 7-9 pm - Sense of Spring Spring is in the air, can you feel it? What about see it?Hear it? Discover how your senses work at night on our guided hike through the woods, ending with a campfire and some delicious S'mores! Guided hikes will be leaving Atwood Center every 10 minutes from 7:00 until 7:30pm. Please join us as we get a sense of Spring!
• May 21, 1-3 pm - Get "Lost" in the Woods Unplug from your busy lives, turn off the electronics, and join us as we "get lost" in the woods. Learn the basics of using a map and compass, and join in with a few activities along the way to help us explore the beauty that Atwood Park has to offer. Batteries not included.
• June 18, 1-3 pm - Introduction to Archery (for ages 5 and older) This archery program aims to please! In this introduction to archery, come try your skills with our compound and recurve bows, aiming at targets such as turkey, deer, mosquito, and even a dinosaur! Archers must be 5 years old and up.
•July 16, 9-11am - A Walk in Their Shoes Who used to live here, and who still does? Throughout its existence the land that is now Atwood Park has been home to many inhabitants and visitors. Discover different historical sites throughout Atwood Park and find out who might have inhabited the area, and who still does.
•August 20, 9-11am - Atwood's Excellent Adventure Bring the family and your favorite hiking shoes for an "Amazing Race" style trip around Atwood Park (please use the Rydberg Rd. entrance.) We will gather at the suspension bridge, and then send you and your family off to follow a marked trail on the South side of the park, with stops along the way, where staff will greet you with some challenges. How well will your team do?
•September 17, 7-9pm - Creatures of the Night Attention all night owls! Learn about the creatures of the night as we hike through the darkness looking for signs of life. Start the night off with a scavenger hunt, and end it with a bird of prey show!
•October 15, 1-3pm - Trailblazers Come blaze the trails and enjoy the beauty of our park in the fall! Travel through our ecosystems and see first-hand what makes each one unique. *Mountain bikes optional _______________________________________
These are drop-in programs, with no registration required; however, groups of five or more are asked to phone ahead to notify staff at 815-966-8747. This series is one of many free family-friendly activities offered by the Rockford Park District.
