Rockford Park District's Atwood Center invites all ages to experience In the Outdoors, a series of free activities held one Saturday a month April 21-October 20, 2018 at 334-acre Seth B. Atwood Park. Bring the entire family for a few hours of fun experiencing and learning about nature and aspects of the park through the variety of two-hour morning, afternoon, and evening outdoor and indoor programs.
These are drop-in programs, with no registration required, however, groups of five or more are asked to phone ahead to notify staff at 815-966-8747.
April 21, 2018 - 7-9 p.m. - Batman and Robbins Experience a night hike to observe nocturnal winged creatures
May 19, 2018 - 1-3 p.m. - Prairies, Photos, and Prose Bring your camera and journal, to be inspired by nature; there’s an optional hike, or take a van ride to Atwood’s accessible South Prairie
June 16, 2018 - 1-3 p.m. - How to Train Your Viking Introduction to archery and tomahawk throwing; equipment and instruction provided. Minimum age requirements: age 5 for archery, age 7 for tomahawk.
July 21, 2018 - 9-11 a.m. - A Voyageur’s Voyage -The Kishwaukee River runs through Atwood Park, and during the fur trade era, voyageurs would have used rivers like the Rock and Kishwaukee as their highways. Come learn what life would have been like as a voyageur during the fur trade era of North America.
August 18, 2018 - 9-11 a.m. - There’s an App for That -While nature is a great way to unplug from our busy lives, there are apps that can get you exploring and enjoying the great outdoors. Whether it’s looking for Pokémon, tracks, trees, or bees, your smart device has what you need; explore Atwood Park with the staff, and try out some apps along the way.
Sept. 15, 2018 - 7-9 p.m. - Galaxy Guardians - The night sky has fascinated people of all ages and from all over the world. Stargaze with Atwood staff and learn from local astronomy enthusiasts about our magnificent galaxy, and how you can help be guardians of our space!
Oct. 20, 2018 - 7-9 p.m. - Junk (food) in Our Trunks -Experience a unique and fun version of trunk-or-treat for the Halloween season - Tree-Trunk-or-Treat at Atwood Park! Hansel and Gretel enjoyed collecting candy in the woods, and you will, too! Dress in your Halloween best for this all treats, no tricks event.
