What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone new to Rockford?
Find opportunities to get involved! This community is open to new folks so get out there and find things you love to do – whether it’s volunteering at an animal shelter, participating in committees that decorate our community for the holidays, or joining a board of one of our many amazing non-profit organizations. Your insight and enthusiasm will be welcomed and it’s a great way to meet new people! Also, get out and explore the countless activities in our region – there's never a day or weekend without something to do!
Favorite fall activity or attraction in the area?
Of course, visiting Edwards Apple Orchard, walking through Klehm Arboretum’s Eerie Autumn Lights, attending one of the many fall craft sales, enjoying the colors and activities at Anderson Japanese Gardens. Truly the list of options is endless.
Favorite winter activity or attraction in the area?
Williams Tree Farm is a must – even if you don’t choose to get a tree there - the spirit and energy of the experience is sure to lift your spirits. Of course, Stroll on State is a must – it’s like being in a Hallmark movie – from music to shops to food to a parade to activities for young and old, to the community tree lighting…it’s enjoyable for everyone! Also, Anderson Japanese Gardens’ “Illuminated” is truly one of the most beautiful settings you’ll ever walk through to enjoy millions of lights in our winter wonderland.
Favorite summer activity or attraction in the area?
If you like to golf, Rockford is your community! There are so many amazing golf courses to enjoy at any level. But more than that, there are literally thousands of outdoor activities to enjoy in Rockford for both individuals, adults (of all ages!) and children/families.
What’s a fun or random fact about you?
I moved here knowing one person and years later was named as Rockford Chamber’s Citizen of the Year. This just proves how this community welcomes people and how each person can make an impact for this amazing region. Get involved and you will find friends, gain new experiences, and enjoy life so much more!
What do you think makes Rockford such a great place to live?
The affordable cost of living, the wide range of activities, and the easy access to amazing cities like Chicago, Madison, and Milwaukee are all big pluses. But what truly sets Rockford apart is its people – they’re what make it such a special place to call home.

What’s your best advice for someone experiencing their first winter in Rockford?
Find the opportunity ingratiate yourself into the community! If you want to lean into your energetic side, participate in some of our incredible offerings for indoor (e.g. volleyball, pickleball, top golf) or outdoor (e.g. snow showing, cross country skiing). If you enjoy a more relaxed setting, attend one of the many concerts, events, performances offered at one of our many venues. There’s always something happening in Rockford!

What’s your favorite thing about the Rockford community?
The people! This community is blessed with so many amazing people who are welcoming, kind, and each have so many different experiences that it allows us each to grow and learn as well.

Where’s the best place to enjoy nature in or around Rockford?
Wow! So many options….check out Klehm Arboretum, Severson Dells, Anderson Japanese Gardens, Rock Cut State Park and any/all Rockford Park District parks and venues.

Best way to get involved in the community?
Start by finding something you're passionate about and figure out how to get involved. Local organizations are always looking for dedicated volunteers, and through that, you'll connect with new people and discover other activities and events you'll want to be part of. In Rockford, every person has the opportunity to make a difference. We’re a city full of opportunities, but with a close-knit, community feel that makes your contributions truly meaningful.
What’s one thing you wish you knew when you first moved to Rockford?
I wished I knew from the very beginning all the things there were to do. I would have attended/participated so much earlier.
