Description: Most Americans are aware of what life was like for Black people before the Civil War. The African American Gallery's, "African American Life Post-Civil War" will spotlight life after the Civil War, showcasing items used and owned by African Americans from the mid-1800's to the early 1900's. On display will be several items on loan from Dr. and Mrs. Robert Head. Dr. Head is the first African American president of Rockford College. The Rockford Public Library has donated to the museum a notebook-format reproduction of "African Americans in Rockford - Lincoln's Era," the original exhibit that the library's Adult Services Department created in 2009. It is based on the book African Americans in Early Rockford, 1834-1871, by John L. Molyneaux. Group tours can be arranged by contacting the museum.

Description: In honor of Women's History Month, Womanspace hosts "WomanSpeak", a new art exhibit inspired by the words of strong females (our kind of gals!) opening Friday, March 5 from 5:30pm-8pm. The special opening reception will feature the artists sharing the words that served as their inspiration. The public is invited to enjoy refreshments, great art, and a chance to meet and speak with the artists. With special guests:Measure 5, Music Academy of Rockford CollegeShelby Latin Harris, violin Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor is his last and largest orchestral work. It is one of the most popular and most performed violin concertos of all time. The program includes Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides, op. 26 (Fingal’s Cave) and Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64; and Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins, BWV 1043. Of special note is Ms. Batjer’s connection to the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra. Her mother, Eleanor Stanlis, founded the Orchestra in 1987. Description: Ayni-Bolivia is a wonderfully entertaining and well known Bolivian folk music trio performing with voice, on guitar and on indigenous instruments including panpipes. The concerts will be a tour of the various regions and cultures of Bolivia through music. The many folk music styles of Bolivia will be described and performed. Juan Carlos Cordova, the group's leader, is an internationally known singer of Bolivian Folk Music and the Musical Director of Music Programs at the American Institute, the Methodist High School in La Paz. Description: Guests of all ages are invited to spend a delightful morning in the Anderson Gardens Art Gallery as we welcome filmmaker Isadora Gabrielle Leidenfrost to Rockford for the local debut of her one-hour film, Creating Buddhas: The Making and Meaning of Fabric Thangkas. This is the story of Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo, a fabric thangka maker skilled in this Tibetan art form, and features scenes with the Dalai Lama. Fabric thangkas are embroidered and appliquéd silk, so rare that in some places they are only seen once a year, and then only for a few hours. Admission includes the film screening, Q&A with the filmmaker, a Thangka art exhibit, and a Tibetan Prayer Flag make-and-take craft.
