What: One of the top rowing events in the nation, the Head of the Rock Regatta, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Hosted by the Rockford YMCA Rowing Crew with support from the YMCA of Rock River Valley, the event will bring more than 1,800 athletes from more than 15 states to compete on the Rock River.
More than 50 high school, collegiate and adult rowing crews will compete in approximately 100 races, with more than 500 boats launching throughout the day. The timed 3-mile race begins near Martin Park and finishes at the YMCA Log Lodge.
More than 7,500 spectators are expected to attend, with free viewing available from multiple vantage points along the Rock River Recreation Path, Martin Park and Shorewood Park.

Best viewing: Martin Park near the Riverside Boulevard Bridge, Shorewood Park and along the Rock River Recreation Path between the Auburn Street Bridge and the finish line at the YMCA Log Lodge.
Why: First held in 1986, the Head of the Rock has grown into one of the top fall regattas in the country and a signature sporting event for the Rockford region. The event draws athletes, coaches, families and spectators from across the Midwest and beyond and is expected to generate approximately $850,000 in economic impact for the Rockford region.
Competitors range in age from 13 to 70 and compete in singles, doubles, quads and eights. Collegiate programs traditionally represented at the regatta include the University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin, University of Michigan, Purdue University, Indiana University, University of Minnesota and Northwestern University, along with junior and adult rowing programs from throughout the Midwest.
Community Challenge: The weekend begins Saturday, October 10, with the Community Challenge Race, a friendly competition that gives local organizations an opportunity to experience rowing firsthand.
Teams representing GoRockford and Stroll on State will compete against other local community organizations in the approximately 500-meter race. Each team includes three participants and an experienced Rockford YMCA Rowing Crew member who coaches the team, steers the boat and assists with safety.
The Community Challenge begins at noon near the south end of Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens and finishes at the YMCA Log Lodge. Family, friends and coworkers are encouraged to attend and cheer on the teams.
Other: Admission to both the Head of the Rock Regatta and Community Challenge is free.
