Things To Do in Winter in Rockford

The temperatures might be dropping, and snow could be on the way, but winter in Illinois still has plenty to offer. In Rockford, you’ll find ice skating, sledding, snowshoeing, festive events, and all sorts of cold-weather activities that are actually worth bundling up for!

Indoor Winter Activities

There are plenty of things to do in Rockford in winter that don’t involve stepping outside! If you can’t shake the winter chill, opt for indoor activities, such as traveling through time at the Midway Village Museum, which spans 26 buildings and houses all sorts of unique exhibitions. You can also spend the day learning about science at the Burpee Museum of Natural History or keep the kids engaged with hands-on fun at the Discovery Center Museum.

Another excellent way to stay warm and spend time indoors this winter is shopping downtown, where you can browse antique stores, gift shops, and boutiques, all before settling in for a drink and hot meal at one of the city’s many excellent restaurants. Or, if you’re in need of some self-care, treat yourself to a spa day at one of Rockford’s various wellness centers.

Outdoor Winter Activities

If you don’t mind braving the chilly weather, you’ll find plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors in Rockford during winter. Try ice skating outside the Nicholas Conservatory (hours and season vary, so check ahead), or head to Snow Park at Alpine Hills for tubing and snowboarding!

If there’s enough snow around town, go sledding at Levings Park or Sinnissippi Golf Course, where hills are open daily from dawn to dusk. You can also explore Rockford’s winter landscapes by ski, foot, or fat tire bike. Rent everything you need at Rocktown Adventures, then hit the snowy trails at Rock Cut State Park.
