When I started my internship in Rockford, I did not know much about the dining experience and events going on throughout the area. Within my first few weeks of working, I learned about many local dining spots and outdoor activities that were a must visit. I created a checklist of places I wanted to stop by and have been spending my weekends checking items off my “Downtown Rockford Bucket List” and have found some great places that everyone should check out!
Shogun Japanese Restaurant | 293 Executive Pkwy, Rockford, IL 61107
I really enjoy dining at Shogun Japanese Restaurant in Rockford because of its atmosphere, fresh ingredients, and consistently delicious food. The hibachi grill experience is always entertaining, with skilled chefs who not only cook great meals but also put on a fun show. I especially love their sushi. It's always fresh and beautifully presented. Whether I'm there for a casual dinner or a special occasion, Shogun never disappoints.
Lucha Cantina | 1641 N Alpine Rd, Rockford, IL 61107
If you enjoy Mexican food, I highly recommend Lucha Cantina off Alpine in Rockford. Some of my favorite menu items there are chicken flautas and the chicken fajita tacos. After your meal, if you have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend the fried ice cream which is both gluten-free and vegetarian. Lucha Cantina has something for everyone and has online ordering as well as to-go beverages to take home.
Prairie Street Brewing Company | 200 Prairie Street, Rockford, IL 61107
One of my favorite places to go out to eat in downtown Rockford has to be Prairie Street Brewing Co. I recommend calling ahead and reserving a table on the patio, which overlooks the Rock River. I especially love going to eat there on Thursday nights when they have Dinner on the Dock, where you can enjoy great food with live entertainment. I love the turkey club, especially the cherry chipotle aioli, paired with a razzle-dazzletini.
Anderson Japanese Gardens | 318 Spring Creek Rd, Rockford, IL 61107
If you are looking for beautiful scenery in Rockford, I would suggest taking a tour of Anderson Japanese Gardens. It is filled with many colorful flowers that are blooming and green plants that are great to admire and maybe take a photo or two next to. My favorite part of the Anderson Japanese Gardens are the waterfalls surrounded by beautiful flowers and plants.
Maximum Clothing | 7164 Cherryvale N Blvd, Rockford, IL 61112
Shopping is one of my favorite activities to do, and Maximum Clothing in Rockford has a great selection of clothing, bags, shoes, and much more. I love thrifting pieces from this location, as well as bringing my own clothing in to sell. I always end up finding some unique pieces. If you are into fashion and resale, this place is a hidden gem.
Sheila’s Daiquiri | 308 W State St, Rockford, IL 61101
One of my favorite places to unwind on a weekend night is Sheila’s Daiquiri located in Downtown Rockford. The daiquiris are the star here: sweet, strong, and super customizable, with a mix of classic and creative flavors. It’s a small, cozy spot with fun energy. Whether I’m picking up a to-go cup or hanging out for a bit, the staff is always friendly, and the music is always right. It’s perfect for a casual night out or pre-gaming before heading downtown.
