I’ve grown up in Rockford, and no matter where life takes me, it will always be home. I’ve lived in parts of Europe, spent time in Iowa and Hawaii, and while each place has its charm, nothing compares to coming back to Rockford. Every return reminds me how thankful I am to have grown up here, surrounded by a strong community, rich culture, and the kind of local pride you don’t find everywhere. This summer, I’m excited to be interning with Go Rockford, and I want to share my personal guide to the city. I believe there’s something for everyone in Rockford, and I’m excited to share five of my current local favorites in this intern’s guide to help you experience the best of the 815!
Rockford Roasting Co. - 416 S Main St, Rockford, IL 61101
As an avid coffee lover, I’m always on the lookout for new spots to try—and right now, Rockford Roasting Co. is my favorite. Located downtown, just inside Embassy Suites, it offers a bright, warm, and cozy atmosphere that’s perfect for getting some homework done or catching up with a friend. They offer seasonal drinks and rotating specials, so there’s always something new and delicious to try every time I stop in.
Ski Broncs - 201 Evelyn Ave, Loves Park, IL 61111 & Dairy Depot 5413 - N 2nd St, Loves Park, IL 61111
Growing up, I used to go all the time to watch the Ski Broncs perform on the Rock River, and it’s still one of my favorite summer activities. Every Wednesday and Friday night, they put on incredible water skiing shows that are so fun to watch. It’s such a unique event happening right in town and definitely something worth seeing in person. After the show, make sure to stop down the street for some delicious ice cream at Dairy Depot (it’s the perfect way to end the evening)!
Alpine Hills - 4402 Larson Ave, Rockford, IL 61108
When it’s not summer, Alpine Hills Snow Park offers fun for all ages. I actually learned how to snowboard there, and years later, it’s still one of my go-to spots. With jumps, rails, and hills, it’s the perfect place to get your winter sports fix. Thanks to their snow machines, they’re able to provide snow even when there’s none covering other spots in town. If snowboarding or skiing isn’t your thing, they also offer snow tubing, which is a perfect winter activity for everyone. You can race your friends down the hill or just relax and enjoy the ride, it’s a blast no matter your age or skill level.
Beef-A-Roo
Beef-A-Roo is a local favorite that’s hard to miss. Whether you’re driving through town or looking for a spot for lunch or dinner, you’ll find iconic Beef-A-Roo locations scattered throughout Rockford and the surrounding towns. Each original spot has its own unique theme, and you’ll even enjoy a bit of character as you dine inside.
Artscene
Twice a year, Rockford hosts Artscene, a tradition that has been celebrated since 1987. This gallery walk showcases both new and established artists from the Rockford area. It’s a free event that takes place over a few weekends. Offering an opportunity to explore an array of art, from paintings and sculptures to prints, photography, pottery, jewelry, and so much more. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just looking for something unique to do, Artscene is a must-see event that highlights the creativity of our community.
