As a Rockford native, I like to think I know the best spots to visit in the area. However, I’m constantly surprised with the gems that pop up every now and then. In my intern’s guide, I’m going to talk about a few tried and true places I love to visit in The Rockford region.
Meg’s Daily Grind:
Need some coffee to start off your morning? Meg’s Daily Grind has you covered. With three storefront locations and one seasonal location, it’s no secret that Meg’s is a local favorite. This locally owned coffee shop offers a welcoming, cozy atmosphere if you’re looking for a place to hang out and a drive-thru for those quick coffee stops. With rotating brews of the day and a featured latte of the week, there’s always something new to try. Don’t forget to grab one of their delicious pastries to complete your order.
Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens:
After grabbing your morning coffee, you can go for a stroll through the Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens. Located right alongside the Rock River and Sinnissippi Gardens, the conservatory is a beautiful year-round attraction. Lush plants, waterfalls, and seasonal events and exhibits, make this a must-visit place in Rockford. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful place to start your day or a beautiful background for your Instagram-worthy pictures, Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens is the place to start.
Rockford Art Deli (RAD):
No trip to Rockford is complete without stopping at the Art Deli for Rockford merch. This locally owned shop promotes sustainability while creating Rockford themed apparel and products. RAD is a community staple that everyone should visit!
Pho Square Vietnamese Restaurant + Boba Tea:
Moving out of the downtown Rockford area, Pho Square in Loves Park is a great stop for boba tea lovers. While their Vietnamese dishes are delicious, the real star of the show is their extensive selection of boba tea. They have every flavor of tea or drink base you could ever imagine, with your choice of either tapioca pearls, popping pearls, tri-color jelly, or jelly noodles. The Thai tea with ice and tapioca pearls never disappoints.
Oak Ridge Forest Preserve:
This hiking and equestrian trail riding spot is a new find for me but has quickly become a favorite. With 7.5 miles of scenic trails that seamlessly connect with the 9 miles at Deer Run Forest Preserve, you are sure not to run out of space to explore. For the equestrian trail riders out there, Oak Ridge offers a large trailer parking and camping area, making it ideal for a day trip or an overnight stay. If you venture far enough, you will find a peaceful access point to the Kishwaukee River for you and your horse to splash around. This trail system winds through a mix of open prairie and shaded forest, perfect for both hikers and riders.
Woodfire Brick Oven Pizza:
Located in downtown Rockford, Woodfire is the perfect place to grab dinner. Before they opened the restaurant in 2015, they were mobile and visited the local farmers markets, that’s where I fell in love with their pizza. If you’re looking for hand-tossed pizzas, crispy crusts with just the right amount of salt, fresh ingredients, and a warm atmosphere, Woodfire is the place for you. You have to try the BBQ chicken pizza, you’ll thank me later.
The Scoop:
The last stop is in the nearby town of Winnebago and is perfect for a cold treat on a hot day. The Scoop, home of the Ice Cream Drill, is extra special to me, because it’s co-owned and operated by my relatives. The welcoming atmosphere and covered patio make it the perfect spot for a refreshing sweet treat. Stop by and you might meet my Aunt Carrie behind the counter!
Whether you’re a foodie, nature lover, or just exploring the area, the Rockford area has many hidden gems. I hope this guide helps you enjoy Rockford like the locals do!
