Hike

Rockford offers a variety of hiking options. From flat paths to longer and more challenging terrain, no matter where you go, you’ll be greeted by scenic views and the welcome quiet of nature.

Where to Go Hiking

Here are some of the best hiking trails and destinations in Winnebago County

  • Severson Dells Nature Center. Visit this nature center on a 369-acre swath of preserved forest, home to over two miles of trails. You can hike on your own or arrange guided walks in advance to learn more about the surrounding environment.  

  • Forest Preserves of Winnebago County. These 44 preserved forests make up 11,000 acres of protected nature in Winnebago County, offering plenty of open space for scenic hikes and other forms of outdoor recreation.

  • Rock Cut State Park. Just 20 minutes from downtown, you’ll find Rock Cut State Park, with lakes for water-based activities and plenty of trails to hike. Make sure to head here during autumn, when you’ll find some of the most picturesque foliage around! 

  • Nygren Wetland Preserve. Birdwatchers especially love to hike in the Nygren Wetland Preserve, home to Sandhill Cranes, Green Herons, Eastern Bluebirds, and other species. The preserve is closed to bicycle, vehicle, and horse traffic for quiet and safety. 

  • Alpine Hills Adventure Park. You can explore Alpine Hills Adventure Park year-round, hiking on trails through the verdant hills in the warmer months or tubing, skiing, and more in the Snow Park during the winter.

Bike

Rockford is a great place to explore on two wheels, with the annual Tour de North End bike festival in September and plenty of trails for beginner and advanced cyclists alike. Whether you prefer road biking, bike paths, or something more challenging, there are plenty of suitable options.

Biking Near Rockford, IL

Rent a bike from Subversive Cycling Company or bring your own and pedal these trails in the area: 

  • The Dorr Road Bike Path runs parallel to the road, stretching from South Beloit Municipal Park to the Hononegah Recreation Path. From there, you can extend your ride further into Rockford or even to Roscoe. 

  • Follow nearly 30 miles of Pecatonica Prairie Path and Bike Trail that connects Rockford and Freeport. Pedal past bucolic countryside, farmland, wetland, flower-strewn meadows, and more. Just keep in mind that the trail is a little bumpy. 

  • Ride the Rock River Recreation Path from Davis Park through the Sinnissippi Gardens all the way to Shorewood and Martin Parks in Loves Park. This is one of the best places to admire colorful fall foliage

  • The Perryville Recreation Path consists of nearly 15 miles of paved trail, which passes by Argus Drive (near the Home Depot), the Midway Village Museum, and Rock Valley College

  • Cross over the Kishwaukee River in Atwood Park and take in views of thick forest, marsh, prairie, and more. There are plenty of singletrack paths here for mountain bikers looking for interesting terrain.

  • Walk the Rock River Recreation Path all the way from downtown to Loves Park. 

  • The Stone Bridge Trail, built on what once was a 19th-century railway, is a scenic and historic walking path through the countryside. 

  • Take a stroll around the lake at Baumann Park on the loop trail.  

  • The 3-mile Hononegah Recreation Path connects both residential and commercial areas, offering a great place for a walk as well as a convenient mode of transportation when you want to go vehicle-free.

  • Anderson Japanese Gardens has been recognized as one of the highest-quality Japanese gardens in North America. Wander around the peaceful grounds, enjoy breakfast or lunch with garden views, take a docent-led tour, or stay to take in the colors of the sunset.

  • Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden is called a “living museum,” thanks to its gardens full of rare trees, water features, and interactive play that tells the story of natural history. The garden’s paved, mostly flat pathways make it accessible to wheelchair users.

  • Visit Illinois’ third-largest conservatory, Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens located along the Rock River. You can visit its 11,000 square feet of flora (much of which is tropical) year-round.
