CRE8IV Artists

CRE8IV artists are the creative force behind one of the Midwest’s most expansive public art programs. Through large-scale murals and sculptures installed throughout the Rockford region, these artists transform public spaces into vibrant, accessible experiences for residents and visitors alike.

The CRE8IV program engages professional artists from across the country and from right here in the Rockford region, with projects thoughtfully selected by a committee of local, arts-minded professionals. The growing CRE8IV collection includes 57 outdoor murals and 34 large-scale sculptures, with several works permanently acquired—reflecting a long-term investment in artists and public art.

We are deeply grateful to the artists who have shared their talent, creativity, and vision with our community. Their work has helped shape Rockford’s public spaces into places of connection, pride, and discovery.

FATHERLESS
Fatherless

Fatherless is a print collective from Rockford, Illinois, that started in 2010. They have gained international attention with their print, installation and commission work using a lurid palette and bold graphic sense. The members operate as a unit collaborating freely with each other's ideas and imagery. This process does not reveal any individual artists or "father" but rather an amalgam of the whole. Each piece is a one off monoprint that will never be repeated. The collective power of the four individuals allows for a wide range of ambitious projects that satirizes what they see as "our consumer driven, media saturated, disposable culture." Artists consist of Javier Jimenez, Greg Lang, Dave Menard, and Ben Rider (UK).

ANTHONY LEWELLEN
Anthony Lewellen 2024

Anthony Lewellen is a Chicago based multidisciplinary art maker. In his formative years he was an innovative figure within Chicago’s graffiti culture and is still active to this day. Early on he made a name for himself in the Midwest and beyond hallmarked by street work that featured a simple bold palette and emotionally complex characters born out of direct observation and digestion of life in the city. His work has come to include a growing body of large-scale public murals along with numerous private commissions. Highly prolific in the studio as well Lewellen’s work is always building upon a highly personalized visual vocabulary rooted in a love of drawing that continues to evolve and grow. The elements of this visual language are quintessentially Midwestern and even more precisely quintessentially Chicago, consistently appearing in his work. The images he creates seem to evoke unspoken narratives written in the urban landscape like images torn from a story. He continues to live and work on the cities North West side.

Sunghee Min

SUNGHEE MIN

Sunghee Min is a Twin Cities–based public artist specializing in large-scale metal sculpture. Her process is cumulative and construction-driven, using manufactured steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components that are joined into larger structural forms. Each work is fabricated entirely by the artist, employing efficient structural systems to build volume with minimal material, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.

Geometry serves as a core visual language in Min’s practice, chosen for its clarity and universal accessibility. While this disciplined approach limits spontaneity, it allows for intentional, structurally sound forms. Drawing inspiration from both man-made structures and the skeletal frameworks found in plants at the end of their life cycles, Min’s work balances delicacy and strength within public space.

Kelsey is an artist very interested in exploring how public art, interactive art and social media intersect. Her murals specifically invite people into a piece and then invite people to share their experience online. She believes that art should not be separated from the human experience. After studying art in Florence, and graduating from Richmond University in London with a degree in Art, Design & Media, Kelsey spent 4 years in NYC – embracing and battling the Big Apple while developing her pen & ink style.

Matthias Neumann

Matthias Neumann

Matthias Neumann is a New York–based artist whose Basics series explores abstracted notions of form and space through site-responsive public sculpture. For the Rockford Sculpture Biennial, Neumann realized a new installation constructed entirely onsite, allowing the work to develop in direct dialogue with the spatial and material conditions of the location.

Built over the course of two days, the sculpture follows a consistent material and formal logic while remaining responsive to its immediate surroundings. The onsite process emphasizes adaptability and precision, using the act of construction itself as a means of engaging with the site. The resulting work reflects Neumann’s ongoing interest in how temporary structures can activate public space through clarity of form and spatial presence.

Christopher Newman

Christopher Newman

Christopher Newman, a Chicago, IL–based sculptor, creates abstract and figurative works that tell visual stories rooted in connection, curiosity, and perceptual play. His sculptures invite viewers to wonder: Will gravity pull suspended forms apart? Will compressed shapes break free? Will solid materials seem to disappear as the viewer moves around them? Using balance, scale, and negative space, Newman creates moments of tension that feel both familiar and slightly uncanny, encouraging close looking and imaginative engagement.

Designed to interact with their surroundings, Newman’s sculptures respond to a wide range of environments, from city streets and landscapes to courtyards and institutional settings. The work enhances how people experience a place—whether through comfort, surprise, or cultural resonance—while opening space for new perspectives on everyday surroundings. Through this playful exchange between object, site, and viewer, Newman’s sculptures spark reflection, delight, and a renewed awareness of the spaces we inhabit.

Ben Pierce

Ben Pierce

Ben Pierce, a sculptor based in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, began creating sculpture in 2010 with a sense of urgency and passion that initially resisted clear explanation. His early work explored forms containing deliberate gaps, symbolizing relationships that had been severed or permanently altered. Over time, Pierce’s practice shifted toward non-representational, form-driven sculpture, with the circle emerging as a recurring and foundational shape—one that continues to anchor his work today.

The act of making sculpture is deeply cathartic for Pierce, serving as both process and personal reflection. Rather than describing physical form, the titles of his works reference emotional states present during their creation. Pieces such as Hesitant, Focus, Hold Me Up, Skyward, and Reach reflect sculpture as an extension of lived experience. Pierce understands his work as a physical manifestation of the self—shaped by persistence, vulnerability, and resilience. By openly acknowledging mental health as an underlying influence in his practice, he hopes his work offers connection and reassurance, creating space for empathy and reminding viewers that they are not alone.
