As part of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated annually from September 15-October 15, the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (RACVB) is continuing to honor the histories, cultures, contributions, and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements in the United States.

And in that spirit, we want to shine a light on some of our region’s Hispanic leaders as part of the GoRockford Hispanic Heritage Interview Series.

The last leader we would like to introduce is Raul Cardenas Sr. Raul has lived a life of service and music from serving in the military to becoming a Grammy Award-Nominated artist (saxophonist) with LaDifferenzia.

GoRockford: What Does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

Raul: I believe it is a real recognition and celebration of our Latino/Hispanic ethnic background past and present. I remember back in the 90's it was only a day and then, if I remember correctly, it was a week and now a full month. It is a well deserved month of sharing various cultures and people with our local and national communities.

GoRockford: Tell us about you. What are your passions, interests, and hobbies?

Raul: My hobbies are and have always been playing my saxophone and creating music with my brother and family. I love to go fishing and boating with family. The outdoor life, as well as music continue to be my two recreational passions. My first interest is actually growing my business and helping others learn insurance so that they can help the public, as I do, with Life and Health Insurance. 

I have been on the Board of Directors for La Fiesta Hispana of Rockford. I currently sit on the Board of Directors for Lifescape Community Services of Rockford. Lifescape helps many in our community with projects and services like Meal on Wheels, Adult Day Care, counseling or advice on service available in the area.

GoRockford: Can you tell us what you are working on to help create and influence history or culture in our community?

Raul: The first item would be the music and culture we have added as musicians and performers since the 1980's in our community and then nationally. I also am very passionate about bringing Tejano and Hispanic music from out of state to local venues in Rockford community. To do this more, with friends, it is my goal to bring back the Fiesta Hispana organization that was a major influence in this community in past years. 

GoRockford: What do you love about the Rockford region?

Raul: Rockford is a diverse and small city that has opportunities for all. The key is knowing how to find the opportunities and work hard with others to grow and prosper. I was raised to know that if you help others succeed, you can also succeed and help the community in a positive way.

GoRockford: How do you plan to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?

Raul: We plan to celebrate with friends and family as always. To kick it off Hispanic Heritage Month, my father Armando, the owner of Screw City Tavern (Steve Moore) and I brought a band up from San Antonio Texas LA DEZZ a few weeks ago. They played Tejano Music at Screw City Tavern on Harrison and Alpine and the event was a success. 

GoRockford: What do you encourage others to do to learn more about this month, the history, and the contributions of our Hispanic community?

Raul: If I have one very big piece of Advice = Know where you came from and know your ancestors and their struggles. I actually am the family historian and have all family trees dating back to the early 1800s. If you know where you come from, and the struggles your past ancestors went through to get us here, it's easier to appreciate and want to excel because they all worked to make the lives of their children and grandchildren better. 

I'd like to share one final thought. With the times as they are and the current political climate, we all need to take a step back and have empathy for others and the struggles they may be going through. Life is short so Work Hard, Play Hard and have fun helping others along the way.

 

Como parte del Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana, que se celebra anualmente del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre, la Oficina de Convenciones y Visitantes del Área de Rockford (RACVB) continúa honrando las historias, culturas, contribuciones e influencia de los hispanoamericanos a la historia, la cultura y los logros en los Estados Unidos.

Y en ese espíritu, queremos iluminar a algunos de los líderes hispanos de nuestra región como parte de la Serie de Entrevistas sobre la Herencia Hispana de GoRockford.

El último líder que nos gustaría presentar es Raúl Cárdenas Sr. Raúl ha vivido una vida de servicio y música, desde el servicio militar hasta convertirse en un artista nominado a los premios Grammy (saxofonista) con La Differenzia.

GoRockford: ¿Qué significa para ti el Mes de la Herencia Hispana?

Raul: Creo que es un verdadero reconocimiento y celebración de nuestro pasado y presente étnico latino/hispano.  Recuerdo que en los años 90 era sólo un día y después, si no recuerdo mal, pasó a ser una semana y ahora un mes completo. Es un mes bien merecido para compartir varias culturas y personas con nuestras comunidades locales y nacionales.

GoRockford: Cuéntanos sobre ti. ¿Cuáles son tus pasiones, intereses y aficiones?

Raul: Mis aficiones son y siempre han sido tocar mi saxofón y crear música con mi hermano y mi familia. Me encanta ir a pescar y navegar con la familia. La vida al aire libre, así como la música siguen siendo mis dos pasiones recreativas. Mi primer interés actualmente es incrementar mi negocio y ayudar a otros a aprender sobre seguros para que puedan ayudar al público, como lo hago yo, con los seguros de vida y salud.

He sido parte de la Junta Directiva de La Fiesta Hispana de Rockford.  Al presente soy parte de la Junta Directiva de Lifescape Community Services de Rockford. Lifescape ayuda a muchos en nuestra comunidad con proyectos y servicios como Comidas Sobre Ruedas (Meals on Wheels), Guardería Para Adultos (Adult Day Care), asesoramiento o consejos sobre los servicios disponibles en la zona.

GoRockford: ¿Puede decirnos en qué está trabajando para ayudar a crear e influir en la historia o la cultura de nuestra comunidad?

Raul: El primer punto sería la música y la cultura que hemos añadido como músicos e intérpretes desde los años 80 en nuestra comunidad y después a nivel nacional. También me apasiona traer la música tejana e hispana de fuera del estado a los locales de la comunidad de Rockford. Para poder hacer esto más, junto con mis amigos, es mi meta traer de vuelta la organización Fiesta Hispana que fue de gran influencia en esta comunidad en años pasados.

GoRockford: ¿Qué te encanta de la región de Rockford?

Raul: Rockford es una ciudad diversa y pequeña que tiene oportunidades para todos. La clave es saber encontrar las oportunidades y trabajar duro junto a los demás para poder crecer y prosperar. Me inculcaron que, si ayudas a los demás a tener éxito, tú también puedes tenerlo y así ayudar a la comunidad de forma positiva.

GoRockford: ¿Cómo planeas celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana?

Raul: Planeamos celebrar con amigos y familia como siempre. Para empezar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, mi padre Armando, el dueño de Screw City Tavern (Steve Moore) y yo trajimos una banda de San Antonio Texas LA DEZZ hace unas semanas. Ellos tocaron música tejana en Screw City Tavern sobre Harrison y Alpine y el evento fue todo un éxito.

GoRockford: ¿Cómo animarías a los demás a aprender más sobre este mes, la historia y las contribuciones de nuestra Comunidad Hispana?

Raul: Si tengo un gran consejo = Saber de dónde vienes y conocer a tus antepasados y sus luchas. De hecho, soy el historiador de la familia y tengo todos los árboles genealógicos que se remontan a principios de 1800.  Si sabes de dónde vienes y las luchas por las que pasaron tus antepasados para llegar hasta aquí, es más fácil apreciar y querer sobresalir ya que todos se esforzaron por mejorar la vida de sus hijos y nietos.

Me gustaría compartir una última reflexión. Dado el momento actual y el clima político, todos debemos dar un paso atrás y empatizar con los demás y con las dificultades que puedan estar atravesando. La vida es corta, así que trabaja duro, juega duro y diviértete ayudando a los demás en el camino.
