As part of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated annually from September 15-October 15, the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (RACVB) is proud to honor the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

And in that spirit, we are shining a light on some of our region’s residents as part of the GoRockford Hispanic Heritage Interview Series. For our second GoRockford Hispanic Heritage Interview, we sat down with Sully Cadengo, a community advocate and local entrepreneur who is president at New Era Interpreting Solutions Inc. To learn more Cadengo, read on below:

GoRockford: Can you share some things you are doing to help make the region more welcoming?

Sully Cadengo: I am proud to be able to provide language access services to our local community. After working in a local community health center for almost seven years, I realized the lack of interpreting services available to the public. There were a few places that provided interpreting services but only to companies and with a contract. Other community agencies only provided interpreting while applying for programs within such agencies. While working at the clinic, I would see medical providers issue referrals for patients to see specialty providers outside of the clinic and many times patients were either unable to schedule their appointments or unable to see the specialist due to lack of interpreting services. At the time, I was limited to only working within the clinic and would not be able to assist.

In February of 2019, I took a risk and decided to start an interpreting business providing on-site interpreting and document translation services in Spanish. For those who cannot afford services, I provide a discount or payment plan—and on some occasions even free of charge. In October of 2019, I was able to provide video remote interpretation via an app as well as over the phone interpretation services with around 300 languages. Communication is the key to everything and being able to communicate in a native language while receiving care or making important decisions is a right, not a privilege. I would like to believe providing language access services to our local community helps make our region more welcoming.

GoRockford: Can you share some of your favorite things about the Rockford area?

Sully Cadengo: What I love about the region is the many activities available for families with children. The local park district hosts many sporting activities that help keep the kids active throughout the year. The many parks and trails in the area make it easy to plan a family outing without having to spend much and still have fun.

GoRockford: Do you have any passions or causes that you’re proud to be a part of?

Sully Cadengo: I love to help others even if it is a small way because I know it can make a difference in someone’s life. I have had many obstacles and struggles in life, so I try to be kind and help others whenever possible, just as I would have liked to have a helping hand when I was most in need. I am a new board member at Remedies, and in the past year I participated in multiple community events in the Rockford/Belvidere area, including health fairs, the Big Top Strong Neighborhood Days with RPD, donating 45 bookbags filled with supplies to the United At Peace bookbag giveaway, and Lotería at the Keen Age Center in Belvidere. My hobbies include spending time with family and being outdoors.

GoRockford: Do you have any favorite quotes or words of wisdom to live by?

Sully Cadengo: One of my favorite inspirational quotes is: “The most valuable possession you can own is an open heart. The most powerful weapon you can be is an instrument of peace.” - Carlos Santana

Serie De Entrevistas De GoRockford Sobre La Herencia Hispana Con Sully Cadengo

- Carlos Santana
