Hello! My name is Taylor, and I would consider myself somewhat of a semi-Rockford native. I grew up in a small town just under an hour away from Rockford. I spent a lot of time here growing up, but mostly as day trips or weekend trips visiting family. When I come to Rockford, there are a few spots I must visit every time I’m here, including coffee places, activities, restaurants, and small businesses. All these places are worth the trip all on their own, but if I could plan my ideal day in Rockford, this is what my itinerary would include.
Inzombia Coffee
Inzombia is a fantastic way to start off any Rockford morning. They feature a rotating seasonal menu with a great selection of coffee, pastries, and other goodies, and it’s located right downtown. This quaint little shop has a cozy throwback feel that allows you to revisit that 90’s nostalgia any time you want, all while enjoying a delicious drink handmade by one of their friendly staff!

Maze Books
As an avid reader, a bookstore is always a priority on my list of excursions when visiting somewhere new, and Maze is always my pick when I’m in Rockford. It’s a small, cozy bookstore that has something for everyone to enjoy, whether that’s a book from their large selection, an educational presentation, an exciting event, or even their in-house chess club. Maze also features friendly, helpful staff and a cozy atmosphere to stay and enjoy your next favorite read.

Mary's Market
Mary’s Market is a fantastic spot to eat while you’re in town. With several convenient locations around the Rockford area, Mary’s Market is a great place to stop for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They have a wide variety of breakfast options, soups, sandwiches, salads, bakery items, and beverages including both coffee and alcoholic beverages for those over 21. The menu is large enough that no matter how many times you go, there’s always something new to try, and even the pickiest of eaters are bound to find something they love at Mary’s.

Nicholas Conservatory
Nicholas Conservatory is a great place to enjoy nature right here in the city. On the bank of the Rock River, Nicholas has tons of trees and other plants to enjoy. It’s a fantastic place to reconnect with nature or grab a few stunning photos. Nicholas also hosts a variety of seasonal activities, exhibits, and events to enjoy all year round, including gorgeous Christmas lights, beautiful orchid displays, the entire lifespan of butterflies and moths, a train exhibit featuring miniature Rockford landmarks, and so much more. The conservatory is also a great venue for weddings or other private events.

Lino's
Lino’s is, in my opinion, where you can find the best pizza in Rockford. With fantastic pizza and other miscellaneous Italian dishes to enjoy, this family restaurant is a staple for visitors and locals alike. Whenever my family from out of town comes to visit, we always clear our schedules for Friday night Lino’s. If pizza isn’t your thing, their lasagna is also a great choice, and their special salad is fantastic. Lino’s has the full Italian restaurant experience, including indoor and outdoor seating, a venue for events, dine in, take out, catering, and they even have a second location called Gelato Joe’s dedicated to your sweet treat cravings after dinner. It’s the perfect location for every occasion, from a casual dinner with family to an elevated date night, and no one leaves hungry after an evening at Lino’s.

Starlight Theatre
Whether you’re a theater fanatic or a casual enjoyer of a good show, Starlight is an excellent choice for some evening entertainment. RVC offers several shows of many types throughout the summer at Starlight, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy, and they feature large casts of incredibly talented performers. From hilarious musicals to educational plays, an evening at Starlight is one well spent, and you can do it all while enjoying the gorgeous summer weather in their outdoor theater.

The Top Rooftop Bar & Lounge
Located on the 12th floor of the Embassy Suites, The Top is a great place to spend an evening. The Embassy itself is a beautiful venue for events or a luxurious hotel to spend the night, but The Top is a great place to grab a delicious cocktail or a late-night bite while overlooking the heart of Rockford. The Top is a great place to visit all year round, but the outdoor balcony is an especially great place to spend a warm summer evening or watch a stunning sunset over the city.

These are my spots for a fantastic day in Rockford. My itinerary of favorite spots is full of fantastic food, shops, and activities all while experiencing everything Rockford has to offer. From cozy bookstores and coffee shops to fantastic food and drinks to activities around the city, Rockford has something everyone can enjoy. You just need to find your niche! Now that you’ve been introduced to some of my favorite places, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do and can even find a few hidden gems of your own on the way.
